invasion there began in march of 2003. there are approximately 6,000 service members still there. they are packing up. today, president obama met with iraq's prime minister. he said the nation is turning the page on the iraq war. steve handelsman at capitol hill with more on this. >> reporter: a couple more grim numbers. total u.s. casualties in iraq add up to more than 100,000. many of the nearly 4500 americans who died there are buried not far from here across the potomac. arlington national cemetery, almost nine years after u.s. forces invaded iraq sparked a civil war and set the stage for democracy. a president paid his respects to the americans who invested the most. the iraqi national anthem. since 2003, 4,483 americans died

they have a free end to rule the region. >> reporter: thanks to the sacrifice of americans iraq will now choose their own friends and go their own way. for the time being, for the forseeable future, president malachi. president obama said history will judge the wisdom of the u.s. going to war in iraq. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. back to you. >> thank you, steve. 130 members of a virginia army national guard unit are home now for the holidays. the guardsmen are with 116th infantry. they were deployed back in june as part of an 800 member force in virginia. they served as security escorts. there were no fatalities. >> i'm thankful all the soldiers made it home. they have been spending time with their families and, you know, just relax and unwind and

enjoy the holidays. >> reporter: another group of soldiers, this one with the 116th brigade based in fredericksburg, virginia scheduled to return home later this month. a virginia tech police officer gunned down on campus is being remembered as a loving father, husband, iraq war veteran and friend. thousands turned out to pay their respects to officer deriek crouse. the speaker was governor bob mcdonnell, a co-worker and a friend from while in the army. julie carey is there with a somber tribute. julie? >> reporter: doreen, they gathered in the stands at cassell coliseum across the parking lot from where deriek crouse was killed. his life was of public service, first in the military, then the police force. he made the ultimate sacrifice not on the battlefield, but this college campus.

he arrived at cassell coliseum yum embraced by the family. the lot was filled with squad cars from as far away as buffalo, new york. all there to support the family and the virginia tech community. >> we are all family and try to be there for each other. there's been quite a few of these. we try to be there for our brothers and sisters. >> reporter: across from the coliseum, flowers and notes lay where he was ambushed by a young gunman who later killed himself. inside the coliseum, the service was a celebration of his life. governor bob mcdonnell remembered the army vet who served in iraq before he took the job protecting virginia tech students. >> deriek crouse was a public serva servant, a warrior, a police officer, a great father, husband, son, brother,

stepfather, friend and fellow law enforcement officer. >> reporter: one of his fellow officers remembered a fun-loving prankster who was a loyal friend. >> i am proud to say i knew deriek crouse and he was my friend. he will truly be missed and never forgotten. we all love you. thank you for your sacrifice. >> reporter: thousands of students came dressed in their tech colors determined to show the community stands together in times of tragedy. >> just being here wasn't enough to show support. i wish we could do more. >> reporter: thousands of officers lined the street to pay their last respekt. the mournful bagpipe played as the family followed the casket out of the coliseum. the blue lights atop squad cars began to shine as they led for the cemetery. the support for the family will

continue beyond this day in the form of a memorial fund set up for his widow and five children. >> thank you. police say 22-year-old ross ashley of nearby radford university killed the officer and took his own life a few moments later. his family is offering condolences and prayers to officer crouse's family. the killer visited a shooting range this year. he hadn't gone this year because he had no bullets for the gun. a crash in loudoun county created a traffic mess. a car and concrete truck collided along route 50 around 3:00 this afternoon. the drivers of both cars had to be rescued. they were rushed to the hospital. route 50 is closed between watson road and gun spring road.

investigators are trying to figure out what caused the crash. former penn state football coach jerry sandusky is getting ready to face his accusers in court tomorrow. allegations he abused them when they were children. jay gray has the latest on this from state college, pennsylvania. >> reporter: more than 50 charges of child sexual abuse. we are getting a better idea of the defense strategy for sandusky. >> all these now young men are following a similar pattern. >> reporter: the attorney suggesting the victims may be working together and toward a high civil suit. >> what you are told by people, in some cases involving at least one of the accusers, that's all they are talking about. what they are going to do with all the money they are going to get. >> reporter: the lawyer for an accuser dismissed the collusion and cash theory. >> the idea they are coming

forward with a financial incentive is ridiculous. >> reporter: several victims are scheduled to testify. there's questions if mike mcqueary will testify. he saw sandusky assault a young boy in 2002. nbc news confirmed another witness, a mcqueary family friend testified he only heard sex sounds in the shower and asked mcqueary three times whether he saw sexual activity. each time, he said no. the highly charged hearing is getting a lot of attention. they entered a public auction for the seat available in the courtroom tomorrow. jay gray, nbc news, state college, pennsylvania. >> b the supreme court agreed to take up the arizona controversial immigration law. that law prompted protest in arizona and heated debate all

gingrich widening his lead in florida. he is now second in new hampshire. occupy protesters occupied the busiest ports. demonstrators targeted oakland, portland, long beach and san diego. the ports have become economic engines for the elite. their goal is cut off the ports that cut into corporate profits. we are following breaking news in reston, virginia. a man shot in the head late this afternoon dieed from the injuries. it happened around 4:30. jackie bensen is live on the scene with more on this. >> reporter: we can tell you there's cause for concern here in this community. this development like the rest of reston enjoys a low violence crime rate. news of a homicide, someone shot here this afternoon has people very concerned.

i'm join ed by officer bud walkr from the fairfax county police. what have your detectives told you happened here? >> we responded about 4:15 of an adult male with a gunshot wound. it's an apparent homicide. we are trying to establish the relationship between the victim and the suspect. we do not believe there's a threat for public safety. >> reporter: you believe it's a targeted crime? >> we are trying to determine. we do not feel anyone else is going to be a perspective victim. >> reporter: any word on a look out vehicle? >> i have conflicting information. i would like to decline. >> reporter: thank you. again, as we said, great concern here in this neighborhood this evening. a man shot to death in the parking lot. we can tell you, we heard officer bud walker say they do

not believe at this time it was a random crime. the investigation continues. back to you. >> jackie bensen reporting from reston, thank you. she's all bundled up. the rest of us were cold outside. the frost on my car earlier this morning was thick. >> the coldest night we have seen. the coldest morning. some areas had temperatures in the teens. most of us in the 20s. we hit below freezing for the second day in a row at the airport for the first time this season if you follow that. temperatures on the cold side. at the airport, we are sitting at 43 degrees. that number is coming down. everybody else into the 30s. high temperature 46 degrees. just a little bit below the average of 48. we start off this morning at the 29 degree range. this month, we have seen 3.34 inches of rain. the monthly average is just 3.05 inches. we are already above average. all of that rain came in a two

day period. the rest of the days have been dry. we are going to continue to stay dry through the next couple days. 43 at the airport. winds out of the west at 3 miles per hour. it's going to be a chilly night. look at the numbers, 28 in frederick. 36 in manassas. 34 in culpeper. wip chester, temperatures around the freezing mark. it's on the chilly side for sure as we zoom in, show you what's going on around the metro area. yeah, it's chilly, but dry. it's going to stay that way for a couple days. storm 4 doppler radar doesn't show anything we are looking at. we are seeing rain, not cloud cover. clouds making their way across the area. we are looking at a system down to the south providing rain into portions of south carolina and the southeast. that is going to give us more cloud cover overnight tonight. it's going to help us stay warmer than where we were late

last night. it's not going to help us that much. we see the numbers dipping down. take a look at the eastern half of the country. 44 in wichita. 39 in cincinnati. there's no warm air but there's also no frigid air out there. temperatures about where they should be this time of year. that's going to be the trend over the next couple days. expect that to continue for the next few days and into the weekend. high pressure dominating. nice and cool with plenty of sunshine. tomorrow, the highs shift to the east. more sunshine tomorrow. a cool afternoon but rather nice. temperatures at or below the average high. on wednesday, the high moves down to the south. we see sunshine. then it gets nice and mild with temperatures in the 50s ahead of the cold front. the next cold front brings a chance of rain. it won't be until thursday. most of us should stay on the

moat riss will soon face two toll hikes. tolls on the dulles toll road will increase 65 sents for a one-way trip. round trip will cost 1.10 more. tolls on the dulles greenway will go up 30 cents. that money will be used to maintain the roadways and pay for the metro rail. drivers will likely see more toll increases in coming years. if you have a bunch of

packages that need to get somewhere for christmas, time is running out. fedex expects this is going to be their busiest day ever. chris reports. >> reporter: fedex expects to move 17 million packages today, a record. a 12% increase over last year and more than double the daily average. if blockbuster sales on black friday and cyber monday are any indication, it will be a record season for u.p.s. as well as fedex. both shippers are expecting to stay busy after today. a few shipping tips might be in order. the engineers at the u.p.s. testing facility in addison, illinois device the best way to package something for shipment. it helps to know they don't like packing peanuts, either. >> you pull them out of the box and peanuts are sticking. >> reporter: bubble wrap is

iraq's prime minister is in washington tonight to meet with president obama and to mark the

end of the war at least of u.s. presence at war there. the president and prime minister went to arlington national cemetery to honor nearly 4500 americans killed in the war. john mccain accused both leaders of putting political concerns ahead of common security interest. in virginia thousands turned out to pay tribute to officer deriek crouse. he was killed last thursday while making a routine traffic stop. he was remembered as a man who loved his family and his job. the man who shot him, 22-year-old ross ashley killed himself a short time later. police have not reveal add motive in the killing. jerry sandusky will face some of the young men who accused him of sexual abuse. he will do it tomorrow in court. he's facing 50 charges of sexual

abuse. several victims are scheduled to testify. the alleged victims may be working together and they might file a high dollar civil lawsuit. police in prince william county say they have taken down a major oxycontin business. >> among those arrested is a doctor who is accused of putting the pain kills on the streets every week. >> reporter: a 73-year-old doctor escorted out of his office in triangle, virginia in handcuffs wearing a white lab coat as patients watched. he was selling prescriptions for painkillers out of his office to the tune of 8,000 pills every week. >> it wouldn't surprise me none. >> reporter: why not? >> a popular thing now. a lot of crooked people out here doing it. >> reporter: police say he wrote countless numbers of prescriptions to dozens of

patients, many of them addicts. he was selling heavily addicttive drugs. >> all under the table. hush-hush. >> reporter: a husband and wife arrested. they were the doctors main clients. this man lived in the basement. he was a lookout for the business. some folks didn't realize this was a doctors office because they never saw activity at the front door. >> never saw anybody there. i thought it was closed. >> reporter: neighbors say all the activity was here, at the back door. neighbors say the doctor was in two days a week. that's when dozens of people and cars would line up. >> business was quite busy, i believe it was tuesdays and thursdays were the day that is he really had a lot of business. >> reporter: police say it was tips from the community that led to the doctors arrest. they noticed a high volume of

traffic on those doctor days. the police are trying to see exactly how big the operation was, how many pills distributed and how many people got the medications. the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected. in woodbridge, darcy spencer, news 4. a military man has been arrested and accused of carjacking a cab and taking the driver on a wild ride. 23-year-old andrew roberts is the serviceman who live d at th walter reid medical facility. he and a female companion carjacked the taxi driver. they hit another car then got out and went shopping at a target in rockville. surveillance camera helps police find him. he's charged with carjacking, kidnapping and theft. tougher penalties for people

who take part in flash mob robberies. teens and young adults break into a store, grab a bunch of items and leave without paying. chris gordon has more. >> reporter: this 7-eleven caught it the night of august 13th. the only clerk on duty watched helplessly. all kinds of snacks and beverages were grabbed and gone. they are concerned it could lead to violence. >> there's no guarantee if he had a gun to try to defend the property. there's no guarantee one of the other kids wouldn't have had a gun or knife. that would have created a huge problem. >> reporter: it happened november 19th. a flash mob robbery in silver spring. some thought a county curfew was needed. that ran into strong opposition. legislation is being submitted to the maryland state

legislature that holds each participant in a flash mob krim that willy responsible for all the merchandise taken. it could result in tougher punishments. they want to stop flash mobs. >> we are not looking to put the kids behind bars. we are trying to say this is a serious crime. >> reporter: the police department tells me they want more time to study and review the bill. it says that it has brought a greater awareness to the problem. >> i think there will be a lot of good discussion and attention that comes out of this. we need to send a clear message this type of behavior is not acceptable. >> reporter: teens here at the 7-eleven tell us they can begin with texting, twitter or with groups of kids just hanging around. >> you know some of them? >> some of them. >> reporter: how many?

28 degrees is the current temperature out there now in frederick. 34 in gaithersburg. the warm spot along the river is the airport at 43 degrees. manassas and leesburg coming in at 36. no rain to talk about. the doppler radar is all clear and will stay all clear. 22 in frederick, 22 in leesburg, 21 in manassas and culpeper. temperatures are going to be on the cold side. inside the city, maybe 32 in the washington area. tomorrow, much better. starting off cold. warming up nicely. the high temperature 58 degrees with plenty of sunshine. 58 would be a little above average, that would be nice. we go more above average over the next couple days. i'll show you the extended outlook coming up. >> thank you. lowe srs canceled their advertising on all-american

most developers know what they want to build and go about the business of trying to build it. along h street, two young developers want to know what you think they should build.

tom sherwood reports. >> reporter: one of the old businesses on h street is smokey's barbershop opened since 1966. walter was here in 1966 and has seen it all along h street, especially the new bars and restaurants that brought new life to the area. >> a good change. you know, some new. it's great change. >> reporter: just across the street from smokey's in the 1300 block is this unusual sign. a developer is asking people to recommend the best business needed in the neighborhood. >> what would you like to see across the street? >> a grocery store or something to benefit the neighborhood. >> reporter: the community idea is the brain child of two young developers who say they are serious about turning the space into something people in the community want. >> the system was broken. all the decisions were being made from the top down by big money from wall street.

we said let's turn it upside down and let people in the neighborhood have a say and be part of developing their own neighborhood. >> popularrise.com is the first in the nation concept, they say. >> submit your own ideas or vote for what other people suggested. >> be part of the decision making and see where it goes from there. when you ask people, they are going to support the business they choose. >> plenty of bars and restaurants. locals want to bring the streets alive in the daytime, not just night. >> we need more retail. it's dead. everybody wants to open a bar and restaurant. >> reporter: they say their idea is not just a gimmick. >> cookie cutter chains are not what people want anymore. they want local. they want authentic. that's what this will bring. >> reporter: tom sherwood, news 4, washington. >> they say they hope to see

locals share in their project and decide what to build early next year. chelsea clinton is the daughter of former president bill clinton and secretary of state hillary clinton. she has joined nbc news and will make her debut on "rock center." she'll have the story on a woman in arkansas. >> reporter: helping kids has been part of her life. after her husband died and four children nearly grown the former edge educator decided to quit her well paying job to devote her life to serving the kids. >> we heard a few gunshots earlier. >> right. >> the gunshots aren't abnormal? >> no. for our children, it's just their world. >> reporter: it's on streets like these where she offers hope to hundreds of kids surrounded by crime and poverty. >> our kids are punished because parents are unable to do or provide for them.
